How to Write Product Titles That Google Shopping Loves
Your product title is the single most important field in your Google Shopping feed. It determines whether your product appears for the right searches, whether it gets clicked, and whether it triggers a quality review. Most merchants get it wrong.
The Formula
The ideal Google Shopping product title follows this pattern:
[Brand] + [Product Type] + [Key Attribute] + [Size/Color]
Keep it under 70 characters. Google truncates after that.
Before & After Examples
Bad (keyword-stuffed, 180+ characters):
"VEVOR Rattan Coffee Table, Mid Century Coffee Table, Rectangle Wood Coffee Table, 42 Inch Modern Boho Style Two Layers Storage Coffee Table, for Living Room, Bedroom & Small Spaces"
Good (clean, 42 characters):
"Rattan Coffee Table – 42" Mid Century Modern with Storage"
What Makes It Work
- No competitor brand names: "VEVOR" is another company's trademark. Including it signals unauthorized reselling.
- Product type first: "Rattan Coffee Table" — Google matches this to search queries.
- Key spec included: 42" — size matters for furniture shoppers.
- Under 70 characters: Nothing gets truncated.
- No keyword repetition: "Coffee Table" appears once, not three times.
Patterns Google Flags as Spam
- "Hot Sale" or "Free Shipping" in titles — promotional language banned in Shopping titles
- "4 pcs" or "2p" — AliExpress/supplier abbreviations. Use "Set of 4" or "4-Piece"
- ALL CAPS — shouting in titles gets flagged
- Repeating the category: "Mid Century Modern Chair Mid-Century Accent Chair Modern Chair" — spam
- Special characters for attention: "★★★ Best Seller ★★★" — instant disapproval
The Duplicate Title Problem
If you have 14 products all titled "Mid Century Accent Chair," Google can't differentiate them. This causes quality disapprovals and poor Shopping performance.
Fix: Add differentiators — color, material, or size. "Mid Century Accent Chair – Emerald Velvet" vs "Mid Century Accent Chair – Navy Leather" vs "Mid Century Accent Chair – Cream Boucle."
SEO Title vs Product Title
Your product title (what appears on the page and in the feed) and your SEO title (what appears in search results) can be different in Shopify. Use the SEO title field to add "| YourBrand" at the end for brand recognition in search results, while keeping the product title clean for Shopping.
