Google's Misrepresentation Policy: What E-Commerce Stores Need to Know

Misrepresentation is the single most common reason for Google Merchant Center account suspensions. It's also the most misunderstood. Many legitimate merchants get flagged because they don't realize what Google considers "misleading."

What Is Misrepresentation?

Google defines misrepresentation as promoting content or services that mislead users about the nature of the business, product, or service. This includes:

  • Business identity — Who runs the store? Is there a real person or company behind it?
  • Product authenticity — Are the products genuine? Are the photos real?
  • Pricing transparency — Does the checkout price match the advertised price?
  • Business practices — Are return/refund policies clear and fair?

The Dropshipping Problem

Dropshipping stores are disproportionately flagged for misrepresentation. Google's algorithms detect patterns common to low-quality dropshipping: supplier-provided photos, copied product descriptions, inflated pricing, and lack of original content.

This doesn't mean all dropshipping is banned — it means your store needs to demonstrate legitimacy. Original photos, unique descriptions, a real business address, and genuine customer reviews all help.

Red Flags Google Looks For

  • No physical business address (or using a virtual office / PO Box)
  • Stock photos instead of real product images
  • Generic or copied product descriptions
  • Missing or vague return policy
  • No customer reviews or only fake-looking reviews
  • VoIP phone numbers or no phone number at all
  • Recently registered domain with no web history
  • Prices significantly higher than the same products elsewhere

How to Fix a Misrepresentation Violation

The key is demonstrating that your business is legitimate and transparent:

  1. Add a real, verifiable business address (not a PO Box)
  2. Use a legitimate phone number (not VoIP)
  3. Write original product descriptions
  4. Take or source original product photos
  5. Create comprehensive policies (return, shipping, privacy)
  6. Add an "About Us" page with your business story
  7. Get real customer reviews
  8. Ensure price consistency between your site and your feed

Timeline for Resolution

After fixing misrepresentation issues, expect 3-7 business days for Google to review your appeal. Be thorough — Google's manual reviewers will check your entire site, not just the pages you mentioned in your appeal.
