Material Claims: Why 'Solid Wood' on Everything Gets You Suspended
Here's a scenario we see constantly: a store imports 200 products from a supplier. The import script applies the same description template to every product, including "Crafted from solid hardwood." Problem is, half the products are rattan, upholstered fabric, engineered wood, or metal-framed.
Google flags this as misrepresentation. And they're right to.
Why Material Claims Matter to Google
Google Shopping's misrepresentation policy explicitly covers misleading product information. If a customer sees "Solid Wood" in the description, buys the product, and receives an MDF dresser — that's a misrepresentation complaint. Enough complaints and your entire account gets suspended.
But Google doesn't wait for complaints. Their algorithms cross-reference your material claims against product images, category data, price points, and known supplier data. A rattan coffee table claiming "solid hardwood" in the description is an obvious red flag.
Common Material Mismatches We Find
- Rattan/wicker products claiming "Solid Wood" — The frame might have wood legs, but the primary material is rattan
- Upholstered chairs claiming "Solid Wood" — Only the frame/legs are wood; the product is primarily fabric/velvet/leather
- Patio furniture claiming "Solid Wood" — Often PE rattan on metal frames, not wood at all
- MDF/engineered wood claiming "Solid Wood" — The most common and most problematic mismatch
How to Fix It
Be honest about materials. It's that simple. Here's how to describe materials accurately:
- Solid wood products: "Crafted from solid hardwood with natural grain variations"
- Engineered wood: "Constructed from premium engineered wood with a refined finish"
- Rattan: "Woven PE rattan paired with a sturdy frame"
- Upholstered: "Quality upholstery over a sturdy frame, built for everyday comfort"
- Mixed materials: "Solid wood legs with an engineered wood body" — be specific about what's what
The "About Us" Page Trap
We audited a store that had "100% Solid Wood — We never sell particle board, MDF, or veneers" on their About page. Then they had rattan coffee tables and upholstered accent chairs in their catalog. Google checks for consistency across your entire site. If your About page contradicts your product pages, that's a misrepresentation signal.
Fix: Use language like "Premium Materials" instead of absolute claims. "We select the right material for each piece — solid hardwoods, engineered wood, rattan, genuine leather."
A Real Case: 39 Products Fixed
We rebuilt a 221-product store. 39 products had material misrepresentation — rattan bar stools, upholstered chairs, and patio sets all claiming "Solid Wood" because the description template was applied blindly. Each product got a corrected material description matching its actual construction. The store passed Unblockr's audit with 0 BLOQUANT issues.
