Fake Trust Badges: Why Stolen McAfee & Norton Logos Get You Suspended

You've seen them everywhere — the McAfee Secure badge, the Norton Verified seal, the BBB Accredited badge, the "SSL Secure" lock icon. They look official. They build trust. And on most dropshipping stores, they're completely fake.

What Google Flags

Google's image recognition and HTML analysis detect common trust badge patterns. When a store displays a McAfee Secure badge but isn't actually a McAfee Secure customer, that's dishonest practice — classified as M4 (Dishonest Business Practices) in Google's misrepresentation policy.

Unblockr detects this at CRITIQUE severity. The common fake badges:

  • McAfee SECURE / McAfee Tested: Requires an active McAfee SECURE subscription ($$$). Most stores just copy the image.
  • Norton Verified / Norton Secured: Requires Norton LifeLock verification. The badge is meaningless without it.
  • BBB Accredited Business: Requires actual BBB membership and review. Using the logo without membership is trademark violation.
  • Trustpilot badges without a Trustpilot profile: Displaying a 4.8-star Trustpilot widget that links to nothing.
  • "SSL Secured" badges: Every Shopify store has SSL. A badge for it is meaningless but not necessarily harmful — unless it implies security certification you don't have.

Why Merchants Do This

Dropshipping course gurus recommend adding trust badges to increase conversion rates. They sell badge packs with McAfee, Norton, PayPal, and SSL logos as image files. The merchant adds them to their footer without understanding they're displaying credentials they don't have.

What You Should Display Instead

  • Real payment logos: If you accept Visa, Mastercard, PayPal — show those. But only if they're actually functional at checkout.
  • Real review platform badges: Link to your actual Trustpilot, Google Reviews, or Judge.me profile.
  • Shopify Payments secure checkout: Shopify provides its own security messaging. Use that.
  • Your own guarantees: "30-Day Returns" or "Free Shipping Over $299" — these are YOUR promises, not borrowed credibility.

The Quick Fix

Search your theme for McAfee, Norton, BBB, or trust badge image files. Remove any badge you didn't earn through an actual subscription or membership. Replace with real, verifiable trust signals — your actual return policy, your real phone number, your genuine reviews.
