Collection SEO for Google Shopping: Titles, Descriptions, Tags

Most Shopify stores create collections and never touch the SEO fields. The result: every collection page has a generic or duplicate meta title, Google can't distinguish between them, and you miss out on organic traffic for high-value keywords.

Why Collection SEO Matters

Collection pages are your category pages. They target broad keywords with high search volume. A well-optimized "Mid Century Modern Sofas" collection page can rank for "mid century sofa" (thousands of monthly searches) and drive buyers directly to your product catalog.

The Formula

For each collection, set:

  • SEO Title: [Category] + [Style] + "| [Brand]" — under 60 characters
  • SEO Description: What's in the collection + key materials + CTA — under 155 characters
  • URL Handle: Clean, keyword-rich slug (e.g., /collections/sofas)

Example: 17-Collection Structure

Here's a real collection structure we built for a mid-century furniture store:

Automated Collections with Tags

In Shopify, use automated collections based on product tags. When you tag a product with "living-room, sofas," it automatically appears in both the Living Room and Sofas collections. This creates a natural hierarchy without manual product assignment.

The key is setting the tags during your product data preparation — not after import. Add them to your CSV before uploading.

Internal Linking from Blog Posts

Every blog post should link to 2-3 relevant collections. A post about "How to Style a Living Room" should link to your Sofas, Coffee Tables, and Accent Chairs collections. This creates topical authority and passes link equity to your most important pages.
