Most merchants try to submit to Google Merchant Center the day their store launches. They get rejected, make a few changes, submit again, get rejected again, and spiral into a cycle of frustration.

The stores that get approved on the first try all do the same thing: they build before they submit. Here's the 3-month playbook.

Month 1: Foundation

Week 1-2: Product Data

  • Clean every product title (under 70 chars, no competitor brands, no keyword stuffing)
  • Rewrite every description (1,000+ chars, specs table, shipping info, care instructions)
  • Assign Google Shopping Categories to every product
  • Fill in Product Type, SEO Title, SEO Description for every product
  • Fix all option values (no "As Pic," "Default Title")
  • Remove all supplier fingerprints (SKUs, fulfillment, vendor)

Week 3-4: Store Pages

  • About page with real business info (company name, address, phone, email)
  • Shipping policy with carriers, timelines, and costs
  • Return policy with clear process and timeline (30-day minimum recommended)
  • Privacy policy (CCPA/GDPR compliant)
  • Terms of service
  • Contact page with phone, email, address, hours
  • FAQ page
  • Footer with links to all of the above

Month 2: Social Proof

Week 5-6: Reviews

  • Install a review app (Judge.me, Loox, or Stamped)
  • Get 15-20 real reviews with photos on top products
  • Set up Trustpilot profile
  • Activate Google Customer Reviews

Week 7-8: Social Media & Content

  • Pinterest — create boards, pin 5-10 products/day
  • Instagram — lifestyle content, 3-4 posts/week
  • Publish 4 blog posts (buying guides, style guides)
  • Start an email list (popup with 10% off)

Month 3: Authority & Submit

Week 9-10: Build Authority

  • Google Business Profile — verify with same name/address/phone as your site
  • Google Search Console — verify site, submit sitemap
  • 4 more blog posts published
  • Backlink outreach to design blogs

Week 11-12: Submit

  • Install the Google & YouTube Shopify app
  • Configure product feed (set identifier_exists=false if no GTINs)
  • Verify business info in Merchant Center matches your site exactly
  • Submit feed — start with your best 30-40 products
  • Wait 3-5 business days for review

What Google Checks Before Approving

  1. Does this business exist? — Google Business Profile, real address, real phone
  2. Do real people buy here? — Reviews, social activity, order history
  3. Is this site legitimate? — Content depth, policies, SSL, domain age
  4. Does anyone link to it? — Backlinks, social profiles, directories
  5. Is the product data accurate? — Prices match, descriptions are real, images are original

Why 3 Months?

Google trusts patterns over snapshots. A store that's been building content, getting reviews, and maintaining consistent business info for 3 months looks fundamentally different from a store that launched yesterday and submitted today. The 3-month investment pays for itself many times over in a smooth, first-try approval.
